Picea pungens "Spek"

A variety with a very regular shape. It grows very fast, reaching about 8 m in height and 5 m in width. Strongly spiny and stiff needles radially arranged on shoots, blue on both sides. The variety has long, slightly wavy, brown cones. It grows best in a sunny location. It is best to plant in fertile and permeable soil. The variety is completely frost-resistant. Recommended for individual or group plantings. Young plants require support.

The variety is rare, similar to Hoopsie, but with a more regular crown shape. Grown by gardener Jean Speck in 1925 in a nursery in Boskop.

Planting
The planting hole is made from the root ball of the purchased plant, two in height and two in width. If the soil is clay, 10-20 cm of drainage must be placed in the depth of the hole, for example: gravel, expanded clay, crushed brick, crushed stone. It is recommended to fill the hole with softwood soil or a soil mixture in a ratio of 2:1:1 (two parts soil, one part peat and one part sand). When planting in the hole, you can add corn wine or any other rooting agent and OMF (organic mineral fertilizer) for conifers. The integrity of the root ball must not be disturbed unless it is necessary. The seedling must be placed in such a way that the root collar of the plant is not buried. After planting, the seedling is watered well and covered with bark, wood chips or sawdust. If no conifer fertilizer was added to the mixed soil mixture, any mineral fertilizer intended for conifers can be added to the soil. All grafted fir trees must be attached to a support so that the plant can withstand snow and wind loads.

Care
Modest and fir does not require much attention. However, by following some rules, you will preserve the plant's beautiful appearance and ensure its long life. Spruce can last a long time without watering, but in hot and dry times it should be watered and watered regularly. All seedlings require regular watering during the first month after planting. To fertilize spruce, it is better to use a fertilizer specialized for conifers, because it contains an optimal trace element composition. The plant itself does not require pruning, but it tolerates pruning well. The best time for this is the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It is important to remember that in one year it is possible to remove no more than 1/3 of the entire crown, stronger cuttings can have a bad effect on the further development of the plant. If formative pruning is performed to compact the crown, the best time to perform it is immediately after the growth of young shoots. This is around the end of May or June. To prevent sunburn in the spring, it is very good to water thoroughly in the fall before the frost comes.
