Picea pungens 'Omega'

It is one of the most beautiful colored varieties of blue spruce, selected in 1983 from the Netherlands. It is characterized by an average growth rate, in suitable places the annual growth can be up to 30 cm, which in the next 10 years will give trees about 3 m. In the end, however, it is a much larger plant, after many years it can reach a height of 15 m and a crown width of up to 8 m. 'Omega' stands out primarily for its very beautiful, regular, wide conical shape, with branches spread out in whorls. The plant's greatest ornament is its beautiful, long and spiky needles, silver-blue on both sides, maintaining this color throughout the year. Another decoration is elegant, long, brown cones with wavy scales.

Blue spruce 'Omega' is recommended for planting in larger gardens or parks. You can use it to create stunning color combinations with dark green plants or flowering plants such as magnolias, forsythias, paradise apple trees or Japanese cherries. It looks good planted singly or in small groups. After planting, it is best to tie the young trees to a stake so that they grow straight and do not bend due to e.g. strong winds. It is a variety with very high frost resistance and low habitat requirements. It prefers fertile, dry to moderately moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. It is best to plant it in a sunny place, because then it will color the best.
