Red oak is a fast-growing tree with larger leaves than ordinary oak. Acorns are popular with squirrels and in favorable autumns the fall color of the oak can glow red. It is suitable as a single tree in the yard.
Red oak grows naturally in the eastern parts of North America. Red oak is a fast-growing tree. In natural growth zones, it becomes a tree about 25 m high and 10 m wide. In Finland, the tree grows about 10-20 meters high. The shape of the red oak is broad-crowned. The leaves are located spirally and are blue-green below and dark green above. The length of the leaf stage is approx. 12-20 cm. The leaves are low-lobed and the blades are thorny.
Red oak is a monoecious tree. Hedenorkos are hanging yellow-green minks. The pistils, on the other hand, are small and inconspicuous. The berries ripen in the second year. The autumn color of young trees is reddish, but in old trees it is often yellow or brown.
Punatammi thrives in a sunny location in fresh and medium to rich nutrient soil. Has overwintered without problems at our nursery in zone III.
