Fagus sylvatica Purpurea Pendula , i.e. hanging blood beech. Originally from Germany, where it was discovered in 1865. It is a hanging tree , whose branches fall beautifully to the ground. Purple Weeping Beech has glossy, very dark purple leaves that turn slightly green if the tree is exposed to too much shade. These leaves, which have died, persist through the winter until new growth.

F agus sylvatica Purpurea Pendula is frost resistant to -30°C. As an adult, it can reach a height of 5 meters and a width of 2-3 meters. Its gray bark is smooth. Purple Weeping Beech is a fascinating species that blooms in May, inconspicuous small flowers grouped in racemes, they later produce fruit, small, 2 cm bristly nuts, edible, but which can prove to be poisonous if consumed in excessive amounts.

The leaves are 4-10 cm, oval, deep purple, in autumn they turn coppery , changing to wonderful shades of orange-red.

Purple Weeping Beech thrives easily in fresh, drained, humus-rich soil.

Fagus sylvatica Purpurea Pendula is a very popular ornamental tree in the garden, regardless of whether it is combined with the golden Indian bean tree against the purple foliage or alone in the grass. It is quite possible to cultivate it as a bonsai , as it has the special feature of being very resistant to pruning.

  • A hanging branch variant of the blood beech, only grows downwards and to some extent to the sides as well.
  • A rather winter-hardy specialty that thrives best in a warm, wind-protected, soil- and lime-rich growing area.
  • Press red/red-brown.
