Pinus sylvestris 'Aurea'
A very interesting variety of pine whose needles turn yellow in winter. It grows a little slower than the species, its annual growth does not exceed 30-40 cm, after 10 years it usually reaches about 3 m and after many years even 10 m. At first it grows a compact cone, with age its crown loosens. Aurea pine deserves special attention because of its color. Stiff, slightly twisted, not very long needles are inconspicuous, blue-green in summer, but in autumn, after the first frost, they turn yellowish, which turn into a strong golden yellow in winter. In the spring, after growth begins, the needles gradually lose their yellow color and return to their basic color.
Requirements: A tree with very low habitat requirements, fully adapted to Polish climatic conditions. Pine 'Aurea' is completely frost tolerant and grows well in any soil as long as it is permeable. It should be planted in full sun because the winter color change of the needles is most spectacular in the sun.
Use: Due to the minimum requirements and the beautiful winter color of the needles, pine 'Aurea' is recommended for all medium and large gardens and parks. It is a beautiful color accent in the winter version of the garden.
