Pinus wallichiana

The lacrimal pine grows naturally in the area from eastern Afghanistan to southwestern China. It occurs e.g. In the Himalayan mountains, which is where the tree's Swedish name comes from, Himalayan pine. In its natural range, it grows in the mountains at an altitude of approx. 1,200–4,300 meters, and there it can reach a height of up to 50 meters as a fast-growing tree. In Finland, it remains a small tree even under favorable conditions. In its range, it is a valued economic tree. In Europe, it is grown as an ornamental tree, e.g. because of its beautiful growth habit and beautiful, long needles.

The way the lacrimal pine grows is conical. The branches are often quite short and slightly drooping. The lowest branches often hung down to the ground. The approx. 10–15 cm long needles of the weeping pine are grey-green or blue-green in color. They grow in bunches of five. The bark is smooth on young trees, but becomes fissured and furrowed in older trees. The lacrimal pine is monoecious and wind-pollinated, but mostly self-sterile. Pine cones ripen in the second year. They are blue-grey when young and light brown when mature. The pines are very resinous. Ripe cones are curved, slightly banana-shaped and can be up to 30 cm long.

The lacrimal pine needs a sunny and sheltered place to grow. The tree does not thrive in the shade. It thrives in loamy and moist, but well-permeable soil. Teardrop pine likes acidic soil. The plant does not like winter moisture. The lacrimal pine needs winter protection in cold winters.

The Himalayan pine ( Pinus Griffithii Wallichiana ) is prized for its elegant weeping habit, and it maintains a wonderful appearance in all conditions: covering the trunk with the ground, its lower branches do not wilt. This wonderful tree is ideal even in urban areas to create charm in large green spaces and is perfectly resistant to pollution.

Pinus Griffithii Wallichiana, native to Asia, grows in the Himalayas. Very durable , it can withstand cold temperatures down to -29 °C. This fast-growing tree reaches 3-4 meters in ten years and can reach a height of 10-20 meters and a spread of 8-12 meters. Its pyramid shape tends to spread over the years. Its fine, supple, blue-green needles cover it all year round. The needles are 20 cm long and are grouped in groups of 5. The Himalayan pine produces drooping 15–30 cm cones, which are gray.

Pinus Griffithii Wallichiana thrives in well-drained, normal or dry soil. It likes a neutral or slightly acidic pH. It can be planted in the sun or partial shade, sheltered from the wind. Planting is possible all year round, except during the frost season.
